“The regions are at the core of government strategy,” declared Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, in an interview with Star Central Greece television station. The minister spoke extensively about the strategic importance the government places on Greece’s regional development.

“The regions are at the core of government strategy,” the minister emphasized, highlighting that strengthening them is a critical factor in addressing the demographic issue.
Pierrakakis noted that the government is implementing specific incentives toward this direction, with a characteristic example being the abolition of property tax (ENFIA) over two years in 12,700 settlements with up to 1,500 inhabitants.
Additionally, he highlighted the comprehensive package of measures announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair, noting that these measures “represent a step in the right direction.” As he stated, the demographic challenge is an existential issue of national importance that cannot be addressed solely through tax reform.
The minister also emphasized that the government has already abolished 80 taxes, proceeding on a steady path of burden relief for citizens without jeopardizing fiscal stability.
Referring to the new tax reform, Pierrakakis explained that “it affects everyone – public employees, private employees, freelancers and farmers.” Employees will see salary increases from January 1, 2026, while freelancers will benefit from 2027 with tax settlements.
“There is no better measure to support families, young people, and large families than to support them directly,” the minister stated characteristically, adding that all citizens will see tangible results “in their accounts and tax returns.”
