Last year, suspensions for mobile phone use in schools reached 14,806, a number that means 2,193 students were suspended each month due to mobile phone violations. The Minister of Education, Sophia Zacharaki, presented data on suspensions due to mobile phone use in schools at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair, where initiatives were presented concerning a comprehensive framework for protecting and empowering the new generation, built around the Kids Wallet application as part of the national strategy to combat internet addiction among minors and enhance child safety.
According to data provided by the minister, from September 2024, when the measure was implemented, until May 2025, 14,806 suspensions (66 per day) were imposed for mobile phone use at school. Ms. Zacharaki expressed hope that this year there will be even greater student compliance so that frequent enforcement of suspension measures won’t be necessary, noting that “even if it was just a one-hour suspension, it certainly sent a message that when you’re at school, the phone stays in your pocket, in your bag, at home.”
