Greek diplomacy finds itself in a period of intensive contacts and developments, with multiple fronts open. As emphasized in a briefing by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lana Zochios, at the center is the resumption of talks with Libya on maritime zone delimitation, a critical step that signals efforts to resolve long-standing disputes. Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry announcements highlight Greece’s commitment to projects of geostrategic importance, such as the electrical interconnection with Cyprus and Israel, while simultaneously managing investigative incidents in the Aegean and preparing for significant high-level meetings at the UN. These developments, as announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochios, shape a complex and dynamic landscape in the country’s foreign policy.
Haftar’s son and Libya’s foreign minister coming to Athens
The completion of the formation of technical committees that will discuss the determination of EEZ between Greece and Libya was announced recently by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochios. As she clarified, the setting of the date for the start of negotiations is now expected. It should be noted that dialogue between the two countries had stopped in 2010. Additionally, the Athens-Tripoli air connection is beginning. In this context, Libyan officials from both governments are arriving in Greece. On September 8, Belqasim Haftar, son of Field Marshal Haftar, is expected in Athens from the Benghazi government, and on September 15, Libya’s Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour.
“The incident in the Thracian Sea is under investigation, Greece will exercise its sovereign rights”
Asked to comment on statements by Cyprus’s Finance Minister regarding the continuation of work on the Crete-Cyprus-Israel electrical interconnection, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson replied “we remain committed to this project,” emphasizing that it is a project of geostrategic importance.
Regarding the harassment of Greek fishing vessels in the Thracian Sea, Ms. Zochios stated that the incident is being thoroughly investigated and if a violation of our territorial waters is confirmed, Greece will exercise its sovereign rights.
Finally, Ms. Zochios announced that at the regular UN session in New York, there will be a meeting between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President, while Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis, in addition to meeting with his Turkish counterpart and other officials, will also meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the traditional dinner.
