The death of Lena Samaras
It should be recalled that Lena Samaras suddenly passed away, at just 34 years old, on the evening of August 7th, following a cardiac arrest she suffered while at “Evangelismos” hospital for medical examinations. Specifically, the 34-year-old woman, according to information, suffered an epileptic seizure and was initially transferred to “Sismanoglio” hospital. From there it was deemed appropriate to transfer her to “Evangelismos,” where however she suffered cardiac arrest and, despite the doctors’ agonizing efforts, passed away.
Who was 34-year-old Lena Samaras
Eleni-Danae Samaras had taken the name of her grandmother Eleni-Lena Zanna. She was the great-granddaughter of author Penelope Delta.
In 2008 she had graduated from Athens College. One of her closest friends, from then until today, was Lilian-Venetia Vildiridis, who today serves as General Secretary of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, who rushed to “Evangelismos” as soon as the tragic news became known, in order to see her beloved and best friend Lena for the last time.
Lena’s passion was tennis. In 2007 she had participated in the Athens College student team in the Heart-to-Heart Partnership Program, an event organized by the Greek embassy in Beijing ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games.
She subsequently followed her mother’s professional footsteps and studied civil engineering at City University London.
Lena Samaras was by her father’s side in January 2009, when he took over the Ministry of Culture, just as she was later when Antonis Samaras was elected to the presidency of New Democracy.
