The de-escalation in international oil prices was commented on by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, speaking on SKAI TV. “Recent hours show a de-escalation in oil prices, however we must wait to see how the situation develops in the next 24 hours,” Mr. Kikilias said, noting that the Greek government is closely monitoring developments in the global market and geopolitical instability.
Vasilis Kikilias: We managed to reduce ferry ticket prices by approximately 32%
The minister also stated that, thanks to government interventions, not only were increases in ferry tickets avoided, but a reduction of approximately 32% was achieved, which, he said, must be maintained throughout the tourist season.
“We succeeded not only in preventing ferry price increases, as initially announced, but also in reducing them by approximately 32%, and this must be maintained throughout the tourist season, because shipping, tourism and real estate services contribute the largest revenue share to the country’s GDP,” Mr. Kikilias noted.
Mr. Kikilias added that no one is allowed to profiteer, whether ferry companies or fuel stations. “No one has the right to burden citizens with excessive prices. The reduction in fuel costs must be passed on to the consumer,” he said emphatically.
On the PNO strike
Regarding the PNO strike, he emphasized that “the state has done what it needed to do regarding this specific strike,” while noting that there is currently no need for requisitions, as “foreign-flagged ships are operating normally.”
He also explained that current labor law allows affected companies, such as Attica, to seek civil compensation through the courts for lost profits.
The minister also referred to escalating global instability, expressing concern and emphasizing that many Greek-owned ships are located in tension zones. As he said, the Greek government is closely monitoring developments.
Finally, he pointed out that the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister are operating at a diplomatic level to contribute to de-escalating tensions.
