The tender for the Kalamaria Marina in Thessaloniki is expected to begin in 2025, while at the beginning of 2026 the study for the development of the Government House, also known as Palataki, will be submitted to Parliament for implementation to follow, as announced today by the CEO of the Superfund, Yannis Papachristou.
He emphasized that the organization’s initiatives in the city, both for infrastructure upgrades and redevelopments, are all scheduled, “with dates starting from now and for the next year.”
Speaking today at the special event for Thessaloniki’s major projects, in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Mr. Papachristou also referred to the projects of the 6th pier at the port of Thessaloniki, the upgrade of the city’s new railway station, the former Gonou camp, as well as the “TIF project,” about which he limited himself to saying that “it’s a breath away from being launched,” referring to the Prime Minister’s announcements ahead of the 89th International Trade Fair.
He made special mention of infrastructure projects in the health sector, a total of 14 interventions in hospitals in Thessaloniki and another 12 projects in the region, which are expected to be completed in the next six months.
In detail, after reminding that the Superfund “intervenes” in three fields in Thessaloniki – infrastructure upgrades, redevelopment and utilization of emblematic spaces, and public health support – Mr. Papachristou presented the main interventions:
- Regarding the 6th pier at the port of Thessaloniki, he argued that without the Superfund’s catalytic contribution “the preliminary works would not have started” and reminded that the goal is to complete the work in 36 months.
- Regarding the Kalamaria Marina, for which he clarified that there is free public access, he said that the study has already been completed, as well as light interventions, while the tender, which he characterized as “significant,” will begin within 2025.
- For the creation of a logistics center at the former Gonou camp, he said it constitutes a huge flagship project, very close to the port, the Egnatia Highway and the railway, which will “move” 3,000 jobs and corresponding movements out of the city of Thessaloniki – and thus will also have environmental benefits. Adding, he said that after the completion of the logistics center, Thessaloniki will no longer have anything to envy about Athens, which has the “Piraeus port-Thriasio” duo.
- For the Government House, he noted that “finally a scheme was found between Parliament, the Superfund and ETAD, consultation was held with local bodies and Civil Society, in August the start of the study and international competition was announced and we believe that at the beginning of 2026 we will be ready to give the study to the Greek Parliament and then implementation will follow.”
- For the railway station project, he said that internationally, stations are no longer simply access points, but redevelopment takes place and the entire surrounding area is upgraded and gains value. “Public consultation has already started since August and we believe that next month we will have the first reactions to this project,” he said.
“Our motto is ‘few words, many projects’. The Superfund loves Thessaloniki,” he concluded.
