Kyranakis on connectivity of urban lines with Thessaloniki Metro
Regarding the connectivity of urban lines with the Thessaloniki Metro, Mr. Kyranakis said that “what we are determined to do is increase traffic and connect bus routes so that the transportation map of Thessaloniki can continue to change.”
Regarding buses, Mr. Kyranakis presented the latest figures showing a doubling of the fleet from 2019 to today.
“From 262 available vehicles today we have 478 and next year, 2026 we will have 551, so we are talking about a doubling of buses, a fleet renewal with more electric buses. Beyond doubling vehicles and better frequency, we are talking about more frequent transport for a real alternative for the citizen who waits at stops for hours, will wait less to be able to move to work combining metro, bus and suburban rail.”
The deputy minister also referred to KTEL announcing that from January 2026, one hundred new buses will be added so that “transport is modernized and improved.” On the issue of driver recruitment he said they will reach 1,252 from 814 in 2023, while finally speaking about better passenger accessibility he presented the new sign with Braille code. “Through the sense of touch our blind fellow citizens will be able to be served. These signs will be installed next Thursday, the first 20 before the Thessaloniki International Fair and within the next months most stops will have this capability for the accessibility of our fellow citizens whom we must always show great respect,” Mr. Kyranakis concluded.
