The well-known politician “passed away” yesterday, Wednesday (27/8), at the age of 91, with news of his death spreading sorrow among his loved ones and the political world.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral and afterwards his body will be transferred to Zakynthos.
The deceased served as a New Democracy MP in the Tzannetakis government, was a close associate of Konstantinos Mitsotakis, and for many years served as president of the Solomos and Distinguished Zakynthians Museum.
Who was Konstantinos Pylarinos
Konstantinos Pylarinos was born in Thessaloniki in 1934. He held the position of president of the Union of Former Greek MPs and MEPs from 2005, while in 1971 he published a magazine called “New Democracy“.
He began his career in 1957 as a member of Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis’s political office, until 1963. In 1967 he was an advisor to the Ministry of the Presidency under the government of Panagiotis Kanellopoulos.
During the dictatorship he supported the anti-dictatorial struggle and was a founding member and general secretary of ERE Abroad.
After the restoration of democracy, he undertook multifaceted political action. He served as prefect of Messinia (1974-76) and prefect of Thessaloniki (1976-80) during the period of major earthquakes, and managed to advance the Thessaloniki metro project. He was also founder and general secretary of the political think tank “Radical Movement” (1980-87). He also served as general secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Technology under the Tzannetakis government (1989), New Democracy press spokesman (1989), general secretary of Press and Information and government press spokesman under the Mitsotakis government (1990-91), and general secretary of the Greek National Tourism Organization (1991-92). From his position as general director of New Democracy (1992-93) he took over party administration and was elected MP-at-large in the 1993 elections.
He was founder and first president of the Macedonian Press Agency (1991), founding member and president of the Friends of Music Society of Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall Organization (1991), president of the Citizens’ Society for the Protection of Natural Resources (1999), vice-president of the International “Maria Callas” Foundation and president of the “Maria Callas” Scholarship Association, and member of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Greece from 2004 to 2010.
He was vice-president and president of the “Friends of Music” Association from 2008 to 2011.
He served as economic and organizational advisor to the Church of Greece and general director of its Economic and Technical Services (1998-2008).
