“Gradually, trains will enter the new section of the network to conduct necessary tests. The goal is for the metro to operate to Kalamaria by the first quarter of 2026,” emphasized Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair. “Thessaloniki is upgrading its public transport category. The government’s goal is to move forward with additional steps,” he added.
Kostis Hatzidakis: His complete statement
“This year, for the first time, people will go to the Thessaloniki Fair by metro! And with Europe’s most modern metro system at that. Even more important is that next Thursday, testing will begin for the metro extension to Kalamaria. Gradually, trains will enter the new section of the network to conduct necessary tests. The goal is for the metro to operate to Kalamaria by the first quarter of 2026.
Additionally, 4 of the new trains that will serve the expanded network have already been delivered. At the end of the route, there will be a very high frequency between train services, approximately every minute and a half. Furthermore, POS machines for ticket purchases have already begun being installed. By the end of next week, all will be in place.
Today, together with Deputy Infrastructure Minister Nikos Tachiaos and Hellenic Metro Managing Director Nikos Koureta, I visited the Thessaloniki metro construction site in Kalamaria and was briefed on work progress. I also had the opportunity to see the ultra-modern Control Center. Finally, I took a metro ride myself. Thessaloniki is upgrading its public transport category. The government’s goal is to move forward with additional steps!”.
