“At the Thessaloniki International Fair we will announce direct tax reductions that will be immediately visible in Greeks’ pockets. And the measures will be targeted towards the middle class,” emphasized Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, in his interview on SKAI television. He added:
“The fact that we have the surpluses we have -and which exceed even our own expectations- allows us to make a substantial intervention. Up to what the economy can bear and up to what European fiscal rules permit. Therefore, what we are saying is that you should not rely on our generosity. You should rely on the effective policy we have implemented in the economy. Basically on the fact that we have significantly higher growth than other European countries and we also have important results in tax evasion. This is how the surpluses emerged and these surpluses are what we will distribute as a social dividend”.
Hatzidakis on large families: We must move as positively as possible
When asked specifically about initiatives for large families, the Deputy Prime Minister noted: “For parents in general, both at last year’s Thessaloniki Fair and earlier, starting from 2019 with the birth allowance, measures have been taken. We owe it to these people to move as positively as possible. But we also owe it to ourselves, we owe it to our nation. Because the demographic issue is the most important national problem of the country in the medium to long term”.
Also, commenting on developments in the center-left political space, Mr. Hatzidakis emphasized: “The key thing for us, instead of looking at what Mr. Tsipras will do, is to look at ourselves. The fact that this situation exists in the opposition is not good, neither for the country nor for us. For the country, because we have always been accustomed in Greece to operating with two major parties and basically two alternative choices. And for us, because many times this leads to complacency. Therefore, although it sounds paradoxical, I would wish for a reorganization of the opposition, but it is not in our hands to do it. What is in our hands is to do our job better”.
“One reform per week”
Additionally, regarding the progress of reform implementation, the Deputy Prime Minister noted: “In the last Cabinet meeting, 25 different reforms were approved for the second half of 2025, of medium and large scale. That’s four reforms per month or one reform per week. And among these is the National Water Plan. There are Urban Planning reforms. There is the simplification of licensing procedures. There is legality in public universities. There are non-state universities. There are 175 mobile health units to serve the Greek provinces, our villages”.
Finally, Mr. Hatzidakis emphasized that changing the electoral law is not in the government’s intentions: “Kyriakos Mitsotakis has told me repeatedly what he has also said in interviews, that his goal is to go to elections late in spring 2027. With the current electoral law”.
