Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Pleuris yesterday addressed the reduced migration flows following the implementation of the three-month asylum suspension, as well as the new bill expected to be voted on in Parliament at the end of August. He reiterated that Greece will not become an “open borders” country, emphasizing that the country receives not only persecuted individuals, but also people with different behavior.
Specifically, in his interview with MEGA television station, Mr. Pleuris stressed that migration flows have shown a significant drop over the past 20 days. In July, approximately 3,500 migrant arrivals were recorded, while during the first week of the month arrivals reached 2,642 people, a fact that led to the decision for the three-month asylum suspension. From the 9th to the end of July, arrivals decreased to 913 people, while after the amendment, during the first twenty days of August, fewer than 400 arrivals were recorded.
