A video showing the first cars that traveled today (10/08) through the new Agios Nikolaos bypass on the road axis Vonitsa – Lefkada, was published by Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a social media post. The Prime Minister wrote about the road delivery: “Fast, easy and safe. Greece is moving forward. We continue.”
His post:
“Another project is completed.
Indeed, there is news in August and it’s good news. So, today at noon the first cars traveled on the new Agios Nikolaos bypass on the Vonitsa – Lefkada road axis.
Another project that was completed, connecting Lefkada with Aktion. And especially during this period serving the visitors of the Assumption holiday. Fast, easy and safe. Greece is moving forward. We continue.”
What the AKTOR Group says
The AKTOR Group of Companies delivered to traffic faster than scheduled, the Aktion – Agios Nikolaos – Lefkada section, approximately 10 km long, aiming to serve citizens’ exodus for the Assumption holiday.
The new road upgrades Lefkada’s access to the national road network and Aktion airport, offering greater road safety and faster connectivity.
This is the largest section of the project “Construction – Upgrade of road connection between Lefkada city and the Aktion – Western Axis road axis and construction of the new Lefkada water supply pipeline in the involved sections,” with a budget of €48 million, which is being implemented by the AKTOR Group and is in full progress.
Exarchou: We made it earlier than scheduled
On the occasion of the project’s delivery to traffic, the Chairman and CEO of the AKTOR Group, Mr. Alexandros Exarchou stated: “For us at the AKTOR Group, reliability is our top value and we always want to make our promises a reality. With the restart of work two months ago, we committed to the Minister of Infrastructure & Transport Mr. Christos Dimas that we would open the road to Lefkada airport in early August, despite the fact that we were simultaneously finishing work on the Patras-Pyrgos motorway and despite the fact that such acceleration of the execution pace was an extremely doubtful success undertaking. Today we delivered the Lefkada – Western axis connection to traffic. Once again we made it and even earlier than scheduled, as our people worked tirelessly for the completion of this specific section. Major technical works can function as catalysts for the country’s development and we are happy to be part of this effort.”
At the same time, the completion of the second leg of the project, Agios Nikolaos – Vonitsa, 6 km long, is proceeding at a rapid pace, which will complete the transport circuit between Lefkada and Western Central Greece, while the construction of the new Lefkada pipeline, approximately 8 km long, is progressing equally fast.
The important project of the road connection of Lefkada with the Aktion – Western Axis road axis is being carried out through two new road sections: the Vonitsa – Lefkada section, approximately 16 km long, and the Aktion – Agios Nikolaos section, approximately 5 km long, with works that either replace with new ones or improve already existing sections. Based on the studies, in the Vonitsa – Lefkada section the maximum speed limit will be 90 km/h, while in the Aktion – Ag. Nikolaos section 80 km/h. The main road cross-section is 11 meters wide, with one lane per direction.
The project includes 7 level junctions (5 in the Vonitsa – Lefkada section and 2 in the Aktion – Ag. Nikolaos section), parallel roads and technical works, such as the Cleopatra canal bridge, with a 33-meter span, which connects Lake Voulkaria with the Ionian Sea, two underpasses, 83 box culverts, etc.
This is a project with several technical and geological difficulties, which is being implemented with absolute respect for the natural environment and passes through protected areas of high natural beauty, as well as through important archaeological monuments.
Within the framework of the project, the new Lefkada water supply pipeline is also being constructed, almost 8 km long, which will serve thousands of permanent residents and visitors to the area, and was designed taking into account the needs of increased population over decades, aiming to replace the existing pipeline, which was installed in the area in the 1980s.
