The Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, referred to free ATM withdrawals and all the new rules that will apply from Monday, August 11, in a social media post. As he emphasizes: “We intervene when and where necessary, with clear decisions, with substantial protection for everyone.”
Free ATM withdrawals: What is provided
Specifically, he states:
“From Monday, August 11, we are setting clear rules, establishing fair banking charges.
- First, we eliminate commissions for ATM withdrawals between banks.
- Second, we abolish provider charges when there is a shareholding connection with the customer’s bank.
- Third, we extend zero charges to providers for municipal communities that have up to one ATM.
- Fourth, we establish a national cap of 1.5 euros for providers.
- Fifth, we eliminate charges for balance inquiries at all ATMs and impose a uniform charge of 0.5 euros for money transfers to providers, as applies to banks. And,
- Sixth, we secure, for the first time legislatively, that no bank can impose charges on its customers for withdrawals.
We are in favor of the free market and in favor of competition. But we are also in favor of intervening when and where necessary. With clear decisions, with substantial protection for everyone.”
The regulation, which was voted on July 25, 2025, was accompanied by the shortest possible adjustment period, so that it could be implemented as soon as possible and deliver immediate benefits to citizens. From next Monday, all Greek citizens will be able to make withdrawals without any commission whatsoever from the bank network.
