“The elections will be held in spring 2027. I will remain consistent with what I have said: I will be judged at the end of the four-year term. In the next elections, I will again seek an absolute majority,” says Mitsotakis responding to scenarios of early elections, in an interview he gave to the newspaper “Proto THEMA,” circulating on Sunday. “I want to serve a third four-year term, the elections will be held in spring 2027. Every government goes through turbulence, I will seek absolute majority again,” he characteristically states
Referring to energy and electricity prices, which constitute a headache for consumers, the prime minister emphasized that if necessary, market balancing measures will be taken. “Energy concerns me very much. That’s why our interventions in the energy market have one and only purpose: how to bring prices down. But this cannot happen by magic nor can it happen by government decree,” he characteristically said.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis makes particular reference to the economy’s current image in the country and the reduction of unemployment. “I cannot magically turn a 1,000-euro salary into 3,000 euros. What can I do though? Chart a roadmap for gradual salary increases, tax reductions. I didn’t say I would make Greece into Switzerland in four years. For me, the greatest success of our policy is the reduction of unemployment.”
Kyriakos Mitsotakis on toxicity in political dialogue
The prime minister did not fail to comment on the toxicity prevailing in political dialogue. “The problem with political dialogue today is that the opponent we must confront and sometimes reach understanding with, becomes an enemy who must be politically and sometimes physically annihilated.”
“If the casus belli is not removed from the table, if Turkey does not stop promoting the unfounded theory of gray zones, it will not enter the EU’s cheap loans program,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis finally said regarding national issues, sending a message to Turkey.
Regarding the OPEKEPE case, the prime minister clarifies that “We will get the money back, at least from the ‘big fish’,” while sending a message to the opposition: “Can we reach understanding, instead of looking at who to put in prison?” I feel like I’m pushing against a wall when I try to reach understanding with PASOK and other parties, he emphasizes.
Speaking personally, the prime minister says he will never accept any reproach regarding his moral integrity. “This job of prime minister ends at some point, I will need to work outside politics. And let those who understand, understand. Fear the politicians who cannot survive away from it,” he characteristically says.
And he adds: “My wife and children are my greatest supporters and my strictest critics. They will tell me things straight, if I haven’t done something well.” He also says: “I like to write on my own but I’m bad at spelling, and when I reread it I still don’t see the mistake.”
