Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced an increase in the heating allowance ahead of the winter season, emphasizing that the boost will be greater for regions of the country with higher heating needs. The Prime Minister made the announcement during an event celebrating the inclusion of Mount Olympus on the UNESCO World Heritage List, held at the headquarters of the Mount Olympus National Park Management Unit in Litochoro.
Mitsotakis: “It is a policy choice of this government to increase the heating allowance further”
Linking the measure to the greater needs of residents — particularly in northern Greece — Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that providing stronger support to regions facing harsher conditions during the winter months is a deliberate government policy choice. “It is a policy choice of this government to increase the heating allowance further, amid an energy crisis, in order to support those regions that have a greater need for heating in winter,” he stated.
The target price
The Prime Minister’s latest comments follow announcements made at the Cabinet meeting on September 30, where a target was set for the starting price of heating oil to fall below €1.75 per litre. This level serves as a key reference point, as it was close to the price at which the previous heating oil distribution period concluded. The final scale of the government’s intervention, however, will also depend on the trajectory of international energy prices leading up to the start of distribution.
Full details to be announced on October 14
The complete picture of the government’s interventions — covering both the price of heating oil and the heating allowance — is expected to be presented on October 14, one day before the start of heating oil distribution. This timeline had already been communicated on September 24, with the government pointing to mid-October for the finalization of measures, citing the high volatility currently seen in international energy markets.
Until then, the level of the subsidy and the final starting price of heating oil remain the key details still to be clarified. The government is placing particular emphasis on delivering greater support to households in regions with higher heating demands.
