“Piraeus port is being constantly upgraded in collaboration with PPA,” stated the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, during the summer season and ahead of the peak ferry traffic period.
The minister emphasized that in recent days, indicatively, canopies have been installed for the very high temperatures, new seats and positions for all those waiting for a ship at the port, special railings and fencing for departing cars, the coolers inside the port and chemical toilets have been repaired, special markings and new recycling bins have been installed, and new signage has been designed.
In detail, the actions on safety and infrastructure upgrade matters at Piraeus port, which have already been completed, are as follows: Shaded passenger waiting areas with seating were constructed, covering 365 square meters, new sanitary facilities were built and 30 chemical toilets were installed for the public, 1,700 plastic posts were placed along the ferry piers toward the sea for passenger safety, 30 new-type recycling bins were installed, 50 emergency life preserver packages were placed on all ferry piers, information signs were created for passengers entering the port area from the METRO crossing, signs were created for TAXI areas and signs for internal route bus stops by PPA for free passenger transport, new parking spaces for people with disabilities were designated, 1,500 plastic barriers were procured which, on a daily basis, five people from 05:00 to 13:00, 4 people from 13:00 to 21:00 and 2 people from 19:00 to 03:00, place them 1 hour before ship arrival and departure, in a U-shape in front of each ship’s ramp, from Gates E1 to E7, for the safety of boarding and disembarking passengers.
“All these together show that we took very seriously into account the safety of travelers as well as the quality of services provided. It is evident that work with persistence and patience bears fruit,” Mr. Kikilias emphasized.
