This year, as in previous years, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chose to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption in his ancestral hometown of Chania, Crete. The Prime Minister attended the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, in Varypetro, Chania.

The monastery was filled with worshippers from early morning, all gathered to mark the Dormition of the Theotokos. Prime Minister Mitsotakis arrived shortly before 9:00 a.m. to attend the service. Accompanied by Abbess Theoxeni, he entered the monastery’s main church, venerated the icons, and followed the Divine Liturgy, which was chanted exclusively by the nuns who live and serve within the monastery.

Following the service, he extended his wishes for the feast day while also paying tribute to the ongoing efforts of the armed forces and firefighting personnel, dedicating the day to those on the front lines. As the Prime Minister stated:
“This great day of Orthodoxy is always an opportunity for reflection and for drawing strength from our faith — strength that helps us overcome life’s hardships.
Today, our thoughts must be with those who are fighting daily against the summer wildfires. Our firefighters, our volunteers, the members of the armed forces and local government who are once again waging a difficult battle against the climate crisis.
Today is also an opportunity to spend a few peaceful moments with the people we love, to give heartfelt thanks for all that God has given us, and to find the strength to carry on with our own daily struggles. Many happy returns to all Greek women and men.”

The liturgy was also attended by Chania MP Alexandros Markogiannakis, representatives of regional and local authorities, and a large congregation of faithful.
Following the service, the Prime Minister was given a tour of the monastery’s grounds and was received in the monastery’s guest hall for the traditional refreshments, where he conversed with the Abbess and her companions. Mitsotakis is spending a few days of low-key vacation in Chania, away from the spotlight but close to nature and friends.
