Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastaurou held a telephone conversation today with Israel’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Eli Cohen, focusing on the latest developments in the Middle East and regional energy cooperation.
During the call, the two ministers discussed the urgent need to establish alternative energy corridors in the wake of the crisis triggered by the Strait of Hormuz tensions, as well as the growing strategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean in the global energy landscape.
The ministers also addressed the energy cooperation framework between Greece, Israel, Cyprus, and the United States through the “3+1” initiative, along with the latest updates on the GSI electricity interconnection project. Both ministers further discussed the establishment of the East Med Energy Center (EMEC), which was formally signed at the Baker Institute of Rice University in Houston last June, as well as Israel’s assumption of the presidency of the East Med Gas Forum (EMGF) from August 1st, succeeding the Greek presidency.
