Under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, the National Foreign Policy Council will convene next week to discuss developments regarding the Cyprus issue.
The meeting will take place on Monday, July 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Speaking yesterday to ertnews.gr, Giorgos Gerapetritis described as extremely significant the fact that the Cyprus issue is now at the top of the UN Secretary-General’s agenda.
“Eight years after Crans-Montana and the inertia that followed, it is extremely significant that the Cyprus issue is now at the top of the Secretary-General’s agenda,” the Foreign Minister stated characteristically, noting that the Secretary-General has appointed a Personal Envoy to closely monitor developments.
As he mentioned, the meeting evaluated the implementation of the six Confidence Building Measures that were agreed upon in Geneva, four of which have already been implemented, while an additional four were agreed upon. This progress, he said, creates “fertile ground” for initiating a more substantial discussion toward achieving a solution within the framework of UN Security Council Resolutions.
“The message of a unified Cyprus is necessary today in a world experiencing civil conflicts, wars and intolerance,” he emphasized, underlining the need to continue efforts for Cyprus reunification, “the national goal,” in full harmony with the Republic of Cyprus.
