The Parliament Ethics Committee unanimously recommended lifting the immunity of New Democracy MP Lefteris Avgenakis following the violent incident against an employee at “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport that led to his expulsion from the ruling party’s parliamentary group. Notably, Mr. Avgenakis requested through a memorandum that his immunity be lifted.
The New Democracy MP, provided the plenary session reaches the same decision, will be investigated for charges including disruption of public utility operations, attempted dangerous bodily harm, illegal violence, threats, and insults.
Ethics Committee also recommends lifting Nikos Papadopoulos’ immunity
It should be noted that the Ethics Committee also decided by majority vote to recommend lifting the immunity of former Niki party MP Nikos Papadopoulos for the vandalism of the National Gallery.
The prosecutorial request concerns criminal acts of disruption of public legal entity operations as co-perpetrator and damage to foreign property serving the public good, placed in public spaces and of particularly great value as co-perpetrator. However, for both MPs, the final decision will be made in a plenary session to be held in the coming days.
