A new immigration bill was submitted to Parliament yesterday, which clearly reflects the message that “the passage to Greece is closing,” as sent from the Parliament podium by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The government aims to implement it immediately after its publication in the Official Government Gazette, most likely within the next few days.
The government is proceeding with the next legislative act that will further tighten the immigration framework, just 24 hours after the approval of the amendment for a three-month suspension of asylum for those illegally entering the country from North Africa, thus completing the package of five measures that the political leadership of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum had decided to implement, which had been revealed by “A” in Tuesday’s July 8 issue. The first conclusion that emerges is that the government seeks to send a clear deterrent message, which is evident from the fact that the bill will not have retroactive effect, meaning it will not affect those who have already arrived in the country, but only new arrivals after the law comes into force.
