The Greek Parliament President also expressed satisfaction with the activation of Article 42, paragraph 7 (EU mutual assistance clause), while expressing the wish that “Europe’s awakening will be permanent and effective in the future and not opportunistic,” regarding the support for Cyprus at the beginning of the Middle East crisis. The presence of the Greek Parliament Speaker in Cyprus is part of the Greek Parliament’s steadfast commitment to consistently support the Republic of Cyprus on all major national and geopolitical issues and to further strengthen institutional ties between the two countries, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability.
Satisfaction with the activation of Article 42, paragraph 7
During the meeting, Kaklamanis expressed satisfaction with the activation “of the notorious Article 42, paragraph 7, which had been dormant for decades,” and as he characteristically said, “all European leaders discussed it and even through this unfortunate situation of the Middle East crisis, it was finally activated in essence.” Kaklamanis also expressed hope “though I must tell you that deep down I’m not so sure, that its activation is not situational, but will be permanent, whenever needed – let’s hope it’s never needed – but that a decision has been made that Cyprus and every Cyprus is the European Union.” He also referred to the issue of energy and high costs, and addressing Christodoulides as president of the European Council, he asked him to exercise whatever influence he can for the development of a comprehensive plan to address the problem at the European level. He noted that in any case, the operational plan to address high costs must be characterized by flexibility, as each country has its own particularities.
For his part, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides referred to the energy cost issue, emphasizing that “everyone in cooperation with the Commission must proceed with some very specific measures, so that we address the increased cost of energy, measures that will be targeted, for a specific period, continuously evaluating the situation.”
Cyprus’s security is an integral part of European security
For her part, Annita Dimitriou, after personally thanking Kaklamanis and expressing gratitude toward Greece, said: “The message is one and resounding, that Cyprus as an inseparable part of global Hellenism does not lie far, but near, and the bonds between Greece and Cyprus are fraternal and unbreakable.” During the meeting of the two presidents, the excellent level of cooperation between the two Parliaments was confirmed, as well as unwavering commitment to the principles of international law, peace and stability in the region, while special emphasis was given to the importance of a unified national line in facing the challenges Cyprus confronts.
Meeting with the Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus Georgios
During his stay in Nicosia, the Greek Parliament President also met with Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus Georgios, with whom he discussed issues concerning the Church’s role in preserving historical memory, national identity and the spiritual cohesion of the Cypriot people.
