In a video posted on TikTok, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the implementation of postal voting for Greeks abroad in national elections, presenting it as another step toward expanding diaspora participation in the electoral process. The video opens with the Prime Minister holding the special envelope used for postal voting by Greeks living abroad, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis noting that this process makes participation of expatriates in national elections “easier than ever.”
Mitsotakis on TikTok about postal voting
The Prime Minister reminds viewers that until 2019, Greeks living abroad who wished to vote had to travel to Greece, while in 2023, as he states, the first step was taken with the ability to vote at polling stations abroad. He adds that the new reform, which was voted on in Parliament in recent days, provides that from the next national elections, Greeks of the diaspora will be able to vote by postal ballot from their place of residence.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasizes that the new process eliminates the need for travel and avoids journeys of hundreds of kilometers to the nearest polling center, giving examples. “The voice of a citizen in Melbourne, in London, in Toronto has the same weight as the voice of a citizen in Athens, in Thessaloniki or Heraklion,” he characteristically states. In the video, the Prime Minister speaks of “equal democratic rights for all Greek women and men, wherever they live,” arguing that in this way the state honors the diaspora in practice.
