The Minister of National Economy and Finance and President of the Eurogroup, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, met with European Council President Antonio Costa today in Brussels, and subsequently participated in a quadrilateral preparatory conference chaired by Antonio Costa with the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. The contacts take place in the framework of Euro Summit preparations and take on new dimensions due to the critical nature of the international situation.
Economic impact from Middle East conflicts at the center of the meeting
The economic developments and impacts of the Middle East crisis, particularly regarding energy prices, were examined on Tuesday by Kyriakos Pierrakakis as President of the Eurogroup, with European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.
According to EU sources, at the center of their Brussels meeting were:
– the European Union’s economic situation, within the framework of the complex geopolitical context. Close monitoring of the economic impacts of Middle East developments was agreed upon, particularly regarding energy prices.
– the international role of the euro, with the goal of strengthening its position in the international financial system.
– progress toward the Savings and Investment Union, which is crucial for channeling European savings into innovative businesses and strategic economic sectors.
Pierrakakis: Expected to visit Luxembourg
Subsequently, the Greek Minister and President of the Eurogroup will travel to Luxembourg, where he will be a speaker at the European Investment Bank Forum focusing on the Savings and Investment Union, the digital euro and the international role of the single currency in the new, unstable geopolitical environment. During his visit, Mr. Pierrakakis will meet with EIB President Nadia Calviño. During his stay in Luxembourg, the President of the Eurogroup, as ex officio President of the European Stability Mechanism, will meet with the head of the Mechanism Pierre Gramegna at ESM facilities.
