Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Pleuris spoke in Parliament on Thursday afternoon about an ongoing invasion plan targeting Europe, during discussions on the government’s migration amendment. “The government and the prime minister will take all necessary measures to protect our homeland from what is happening. What is occurring right now is not normal migratory flow. It is an invasion operation towards Europe. In 2024 we had around 4,000 arrivals and in 2025 we already have 8,000 arrivals. In recent days, boats were arriving with 1,000 people,” Pleuris initially stated.

He also revealed that at least 3 million migrants have currently gathered on the Libyan coasts who want to enter Europe, and argued that if Europe allows them to enter en masse, this would mean population replacement. Indeed, when the leader of Course of Freedom Zoe Konstantopoulou rushed to interrupt him, shouting about regulations that contradict European law, Thanos Pleuris launched a fierce attack against those parties that criticize the men and women of the coast guard. “We have parties that slander the coast guards who protect our borders and save people. We will not allow massive boat arrivals to return under the framework of false humanitarianism. Your pseudo-humanitarianism towards the so-called rescuers you support and the multi-million euro NGOs that milk European funds. There is no altruism in NGOs. They make money. The humanitarianism of commerce ends,” he characteristically stated.
At the same time, he referred to the amendment and said it is based on the Evros model. He even emphasized this, saying that both Spain and Poland followed similar measures and were accepted by the European court. He also stressed that the Commission has been informed about the measures to be taken, adding that they are in the spirit of European law. Additionally, he was quick to say that for the case of Evros, there was a temporary order from the President of the Council of State that justified not accepting the asylum application.
“Anyone who is arrested and detained will now be returned at the first opportunity without needing to go through the registration process. With the bill that will come, refusing to leave once your asylum is rejected will constitute an independent illegal act with imprisonment that is not suspended. The path for illegal migrants will be either prison or exit,” Thanos Pleuris characteristically emphasized.
