Stricter measures for managing migration flows, creation of new permanent facilities and continuation of dialogue and cooperation with the two governments of Libya, includes the government’s turn to a harder line on immigration by implementing a plan of multiple interventions. The goal is to close the so-called southern corridor controlled by smuggling networks originating from Eastern Libya and destined for Southern Crete and Gavdos, with the announcements made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself from the Parliament podium, immediately after the meeting he had at the Maximos Mansion with the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris.
Starting his statement, the Prime Minister said: “Let me make some initial comments about immigration and Libya. Soon there will be a reaction from Brussels as well. However, let me inform you about certain decisions taken by the Greek government. You know the numbers of illegal immigrants who have arrived in recent weeks in Crete. This emergency situation requires emergency response measures and the government decided to inform the European Commission.”
