The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring developments surrounding the espionage case involving a 54-year-old air force commander. According to information available so far, the indictment against him includes new evidence, while authorities are also searching for his accomplices. The case has caused serious concern among relevant authorities, while investigations continue with the participation of the National Intelligence Service (EYP), the General Staff, and specialized cybercrime investigators. The investigative work focuses on mapping the defendant’s contacts and identifying potential accomplices.
Foreign Ministry’s response to the espionage case and China’s involvement
Regarding the case and following the 54-year-old’s confession that he was extracting information on behalf of China, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochios was inevitably asked during the press briefing whether the ministry had made any contact with the Chinese embassy. Ms. Zochios responded: “There is an ongoing process. We await the relevant findings from the investigation when it is completed. Our bilateral diplomatic relations are based on mutual respect. And they must be based on that. This is how we want to continue our relations, with mutual respect as an essential prerequisite. Once the above becomes clear.”
