Against lifting immunity of the 14 New Democracy MPs who formed the majority in the preliminary investigation committee for Christos Triantopoulos, and were sued by the president of the “Tempe 2023” Association Maria Karystianou, for the crime of high treason, said the Parliamentary Ethics Committee.
New Democracy’s “no” to lifting immunity of 14 MPs in the Tempe case
Only New Democracy MPs voted against, while PASOK, SYRIZA, KKE and New Left declared themselves “present,” while Greek Solution, Victory and Course of Freedom voted in favor. Wanting to justify their stance, SYRIZA MPs emphasized that while they are “politically absolutely opposed to New Democracy’s machinations in the Preliminary Investigation Committee, the vote of MPs should not be criminalized.
New Democracy commented that the Constitution explicitly states that an MP cannot be prosecuted or examined for opinions or votes during the exercise of their duties. However, majority MPs in private discussions mentioned that the stance, even of systemic parties, creates a bad precedent, as an MP’s vote cannot be evaluated criminally. The case for lifting immunity of the 14 New Democracy MPs is introduced with a negative opinion to the Plenary, which will make the final decision.
