Complaints, anxiety and concerns prevail among SYRIZA officials, as well as those in the broader Left who wish to follow Alexis Tsipras in his new venture, as they believe that the way the former prime minister is moving, developments will overtake him.
The fact that Alexis Tsipras does not appear to have intensified his moves for the time being – despite what is being said – for the creation of the new party makes many believe that he is still thinking about it. But even those who estimate that there is no room for retreat from the former prime minister appear cautious about the future of the new venture, as they say that things change from moment to moment and Alexis Tsipras refuses to acknowledge it.
The truth is that while the creation of the new political party by Alexis Tsipras started promisingly, along the way the issue “stalled,” as the Karystianou party also emerged. This fact made the former prime minister more cautious, as it turns out however without serious reason, since Maria Karystianou appeals more to a right-wing and far-right audience, rather than to center-left voters.
Many argue that his moves no longer create any momentum, although at the Prime Minister’s Office, despite what they say, they treat him as the most difficult opponent. The officials who wish to stand by him believe that he should abandon the cautious stance he has maintained until today and come forward on the issue of Constitutional Revision, on national issues and generally on matters that concern citizens.
To the information suggesting that he will postpone the creation of the new political party for later, they respond that he may lose valuable time and in reality, with his stance, eliminate the possibility of appearing as an alternative solution for society.
Moreover, as it appears, he is already paying for his reservation about the next step, since in polls he is losing a percentage of people who until recently appeared ready to follow him.
The most important thing, however, is that most people don’t know where Alexis Tsipras wants to take it, since one time he appears to argue with the logic that he addresses a center-left audience and another time he speaks as a traditional leftist to an audience close to SYRIZA.
Some even raise the question of whether the former prime minister is trying to do something that doesn’t fully express him – the opening to the center-left – and that’s why he still can’t defend it as much as he would like.
“Maturing doesn’t automatically mean I submit,” say characteristically people who believe in Alexis Tsipras and await his next move with anxiety, pointing out that for now the agenda set by the former prime minister is not appropriate. What those who hope to stand by him maintain for now, however, is that the new venture will not resemble SYRIZA in anything – although officials from Koumoundourou will be included – since the only thing that is clear is that he will not accept being bound by opinions and tendencies.
