The government proposal for a radical restructuring of how diaspora Greeks participate in national elections is moving toward implementation. Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios is convening an informal bipartisan committee tomorrow to officially present a framework of three fundamental changes that will take effect from the next national elections.
The three pillars of diaspora postal voting reform
The proposed bill moves along three axes, aimed at facilitating voters while ensuring direct representation of diaspora Greeks in Parliament:
- Establishment of postal voting: For the first time in national elections, Greeks abroad will have the opportunity to exercise their voting rights through postal voting from their place of permanent residence. The procedure will follow the model successfully implemented in recent European elections.
- Creation of diaspora Greek constituency: A separate electoral district is being established for expatriate Greeks. According to the plan, each party will be able to include up to five candidates on its ballot for this specific constituency, from which a total of three MPs will be elected.
- Redistribution of state-wide seats: To create the three seats for the new diaspora constituency, state-wide MP positions will be reduced from the current 15 to 12. The three seats “removed” from the state-wide list will be transferred directly to diaspora Greek representation.
It should be noted that approval of this specific reform requires an enhanced majority of 200 votes in Parliament, making the stance of opposition parties crucial for the outcome of this initiative.
