Maria Karystianos continues making one mistake after another, as on Tuesday she attempted to retract the impressions created by her statements about abortions, claiming deliberate distortion of her words and character assassination, without actually explaining how her statements were distorted.
“Yesterday’s response on the abortion issue was deliberately distorted by those who are in organized service to tear me down and ruthlessly conspire in the political contract of character assassination against me,” Maria Karystianos wrote in a post responding to the controversy caused by yesterday’s interview.
Karystianos: Attempts to “retract” abortion statements, alleges “character assassination” without providing explanations
Let’s examine, however, the statement that Maria Karystianos claims was distorted. Initially in her interview she had stated: “I respect free will. It is important and guaranteed,” while later she expressed the view “let society decide what it would like to happen.” She added, in fact, that “the issue is that in the case of abortions there is also another very moral issue. That’s why in public consultation most people will have a better opinion or it will be more democratic. Because we’re talking about a life that is just being born.” Asked to clarify her position, she said: “My science has put me in a position to see things caring for the life that has been created while fully understanding the woman’s right to decide whether she wants procreation or not,” while she argued that “from the moment a child’s heart starts beating at three months, it is considered a life that has been created.”
Obviously, Maria Karystianos did not expect the fierce reactions from society that followed, as she received harsh criticism on social media, while one after another, political parties condemned her stance and identified it with the most extreme expressions of such a view.
Maria Karystianos realized on Tuesday that the lies were over and that she would now be judged like any politician or candidate party leader who makes mistakes, who says something extreme. Obviously, she doesn’t like this, as until today as president of the Association of Relatives of Tempe Victims 2023 she had different treatment.
However, Maria Karystianos’s stance reveals something else. That, despite her anti-establishment stance, she immediately resorted to the argument used by most politicians when they make mistakes and receive criticism. That is, that her words were misrepresented and distorted.
Instead of finding a way to explain why she said all this, she accused the majority of media of being in organized service and conspiring in the political contract of character assassination. Maria Karystianos is talking about the same media that until recently stood by her side in her fight for justice.
The most important thing, however, is that nowhere in her post does she say that the distortion has to do with the fact that she has a different view on abortions. And she doesn’t say it because quite simply she doesn’t have a different view. This is what she believed, this is what she believes, and she’s simply now making it known to citizens.
As can be understood, however, these views ultimately appeal more to the extreme right audience rather than to voters of the Left and Center-Left. According to the Opinion Poll survey for Action 24, to the question “how likely are you to vote for a Karystianos party,” four parliamentary forces show the greatest losses. Specifically, Greek Solution voters answer “very likely” at 27.1% and 14.6% “quite likely,” while from Victory party 24% declares “very likely” and 20% “quite likely.” From Course of Freedom 18.5% answers “very likely” and 22.2% “quite likely.” Naturally, SYRIZA also has losses, where 23.7% supports that it’s “very” likely to vote for it and 21.2% “quite” likely. All this, however, was until yesterday…
