The resignations in Cyprus, which confirmed the domino theory after the publication of a video that leaves a clear stain regarding the Presidency, are useful but not enough, according to Annita Dimitriou. The president of the Cyprus House of Representatives since 2021 and president of the Democratic Rally since 2023 published a video message on social media. The Greek Cypriot politician called for unity to investigate the incident and communicate to citizens – who “demand a comprehensive action plan” – exactly what happened. Annita Dimitriou requested the prosecutor’s ex officio intervention in the incident and absolute transparency regarding the funds of the Independent Social Support Organization, “or complete abolition of it.”
The president of the House of Representatives doesn’t “spare” the creators of the video, but the revelations are shocking. Additionally, she emphasizes that initiatives are needed that “will convince that there is no cover-up but full cooperation, and will eliminate any suspicion of corruption and entanglement.”
Cyprus bribery case: Annita Dimitriou’s statement
With what we heard and saw in the video, the country’s prestige and credibility were damaged. At a time when Cyprus is presiding over the European Union, and it’s not the political parties asking for explanations. The entire society demands it.
The motives of the creators are certainly alien and malicious. And they should be investigated thoroughly. What is being revealed, however, is shocking and causes justified indignation and anger.
Necessary, correct and useful resignations for the investigation, but citizens demand a comprehensive action plan:
1. Taking responsibility with specific political decisions and initiatives. Initiatives that will convince that there is no cover-up but full cooperation, and will eliminate any suspicion of corruption and entanglement.
2. Full and independent investigation. The Attorney General must ex officio examine everything mentioned in the video for possible violations of laws and established procedures.
3. Drastic changes and absolute transparency for the Organization’s Fund or complete abolition and finding alternative ways to support students.
We must change what troubles us. To support our country, to restore society’s trust, to serve the principles of transparency, control and accountability.
All institutions must move in the same direction. This is how we will protect our homeland’s prestige. This is what the well-understood interest of our country demands.
