Middle East: Greek side also engaged in intense diplomatic talks
On Saturday afternoon, Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, initiated by the latter. The Greek Prime Minister, according to official information from the Maximos Mansion, emphasized the need for de-escalation. He acknowledged that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, but stressed that the solution lies in diplomacy and that the last thing the region needs is new flashpoints. Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphatically underlined the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.
It should be recalled that during the National Security Council meeting, which lasted one hour on Friday afternoon, an assessment of the latest Middle East developments was conducted, and Minister Gerapetritis briefed on the situation in the Middle East and the assistance being provided from the first moment to Greek citizens in Israel and Iran. The government, as emphasized in the related announcement, is watching with concern developments that carry the risk of serious escalation in the region. It also calls on parties to exercise restraint and not proceed with further escalation that would cause broader destabilization. Greece’s steadfast position is that solutions must be sought through diplomacy, the Maximos Mansion emphasizes, concluding that our country will continue to work in this direction with partners and allies for the benefit of stability and security in the broader region.
