«The country is ungovernable» emphasized Evangelos Venizelos in his latest intervention and noted that «there is no social contract» citing research data showing that Greeks declare their incomes to be insufficient. «Democracy has a problem not only in Greece and it’s not the Constitution or the laws that are to blame, but the way institutions interact» underlined Mr. Venizelos. He estimated, however, that «there is a national security issue. Greece, unlike other European Union and NATO countries, has a hybrid problem. It considers Turkey a threat. Therefore, there is a problem in Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue».
Responding to the revelations from the Big Mouth column of PowerGame, Mr. Venizelos emphasized that the government «is bothered when we say that wiretapping should not occur in the country and that at the Athens Single-Member Criminal Court these weeks the wiretapping problem is being revealed as neither the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office nor the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee could reveal it. We say that the procedure under the law on ministerial responsibility should have been initiated for OPEKEPE, they preferred the trivialization of parliamentary procedures, mass postal voting to reach this Inquiry Committee which operates grotesquely, that is, produces a spectacle which is a tragicomic spectacle, institutionally and politically every day. So what happens when I say I support, for example, Mitsotakis’ proposal for the pentarchy in the Mediterranean or when I argue that the law on non-state universities should have been passed? Then my views are good. I say therefore that Article 16 of the Constitution must be interpreted in accordance with EU Law, the entire Constitution must be interpreted in accordance with International Law and in accordance with EU Law. Let me clarify, however, that the regulation for the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in which some European Union countries participate, not all, there are others that have maintained reservations or are completely outside».
Venizelos on Alexis Tsipras and PASOK
When asked about this, Mr. Venizelos said he is not a «team» with Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras and observed that his views are judged as good when he agrees with the government but not when he raises issues about the functioning of institutions and the rule of law.
Evangelos Venizelos clarified, in his interview with SKAI, that he will not be a parliamentary candidate in the next elections, while regarding Alexis Tsipras he estimated that he doesn’t emphasize the future and pointed out that PASOK should be the leading force in the center-left.
