On Fox Business and specifically, on the Varney&Co. show, Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastathrou spoke to Stuart Varney, highlighting the central role of energy from the Aegean to the Atlantic in shaping the geopolitical architecture.
Papastathrou on Fox Business: “Energy changes geopolitical architecture, with Greece as central pillar”
When asked by Varney whether Greece will become Europe’s main gateway for American LNG, the minister emphasized that “from the Aegean to the Atlantic, energy is changing the geopolitical architecture, and Greece is the central pillar in this new architecture“.
He added that during his meeting with U.S. Interior Secretary and Head of the Energy Sovereignty Council Doug Burgum, they discussed specific plans to completely free Europe from Russian gas and replace it with American LNG. As he noted: “And this is happening through Greece, which has the appropriate infrastructure — Revithoussa and the FSRU in Alexandroupolis —, has the ideal geographical position, is located at the crossroads of three continents, has a strong economy and political stability and serves as the gateway for American LNG to Central Europe“.
Furthermore, when asked whether contracts have been signed for the supply of American LNG, Papastathrou answered affirmatively saying: “There are already American LNG exporters who have signed agreements with Greek companies, and this LNG will reach all the way to Ukraine“.
He also reminded that Ukraine has suffered enormous damage to its energy infrastructure from Russia, and recently, at Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ office in Athens, an agreement was signed with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where “Naftogaz, DEPA and AKTOR agreed to bring American LNG for February and March -approximately 0.3 billion cubic meters- to support the Ukrainian people“.
Stavros Papastathrou concluded by saying: “And the agreement was made in the presence of the U.S. Ambassador, Mrs. Guilfoyle, who has played a decisive role in this energy restructuring“.
