The tensions in Vorizia, Heraklion show no signs of abating following the double homicide that shocked the village. The sister of 56-year-old Evangelia Fragkiadaki, who was killed by gunfire while walking on the street, reported that she was verbally attacked by the mother of 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis.
“I see the dead man’s mother in front of me and she verbally attacked me. She was holding a broom and dustpan. She called me filth and called my children bastards,” she told Star TV. She added that she did not retaliate and asked, “Will you forbid me from going to my child’s house?” Eventually, police officers intervened to separate the two women.
Two Kargakis family suspects remanded in custody
Meanwhile, two suspects from the Kargakis family were remanded in custody. These are the 43-year-old son-in-law of Fanouris and their 48-year-old relative, who gave testimony before the competent Heraklion Investigating Magistrate through summary procedures. According to preliminary investigation material, the 43-year-old is believed to be the person who was carrying a Kalashnikov and firing on the fatal day.
The 43-year-old reportedly exercised his right to remain silent. The 48-year-old, meanwhile, submitted a defense memorandum claiming that he neither carried a weapon nor fired shots, and consequently had no involvement in the incident. By decision of the Prosecutor and Investigating Magistrate, both the 43-year-old and 48-year-old were ordered to be remanded in custody.
The total number of those remanded in custody now reaches seven – five from the Fragkiadaki family and two from the Kargakis family.
Vorizia primary school reopens with half the students
It should be noted that the Primary School and Kindergarten of Vorizia reopened today — with physical attendance — one week after the recent dramatic events in the village of Faistos Municipality.
It’s worth noting that today, out of 40 primary school students, 20 returned, while in the kindergarten, only 3 out of 12 children went to school.
