Family, friends and colleagues are saying their final goodbye to Iro Kariofilli, the journalist who passed away on Tuesday, July 1st, at the age of 53, after a brave battle with cancer. The funeral service is taking place in Serres, the place where the journalist was born and raised. A large crowd has gathered at the Holy Church of Saint Dimitrios of Neos Skopos in Serres.
Maria Nikoltsou spoke to the “Super Katerina” camera about the loss of her friend and colleague, with whom she worked together for 33 years: “Iro Kariofilli and I have been together since we were 19. We worked together for 33 years. A piece of our lives is leaving. I’m saddened that we used to say we would come to Serres together, and unfortunately I’m coming after a long time for something so terrible. She faced her illness with incredible strength and incredible courage, but also with incredible humor. She talked about her doctor, calling her ‘doc.’ Always with her beautiful shoes, her little bags, the incredible sensitivity she had. A fighter until the last moment. She was doing reporting until very recently. Reporting was her love and passion. That’s how we grew up.”
Iro Kariofilli: The farewell messages
As stated in yesterday’s announcement from ESIEA: “The Administrative Council of ESIEA announces that the funeral service for Argyri (Iro) Kariofilli will be held at the Holy Church of Saint Dimitrios of Neos Skopos in Serres tomorrow, Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:30 a.m.”
The journalist passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1st, and the sad news was announced by Rena Kouveliotou, her colleague, through a social media post, expressing her grief for the loss.
In recent years, Iro Kariofilli was facing a serious health problem, which she had spoken about last year, without giving many details. As she had mentioned: “Because most of my colleagues know that in people’s lives there are some moments that are difficult and some moments that are extremely difficult and you have to fight. And you have to fight for things that others take for granted. And because this is such a difficult moment that exists in my own life, I want to tell you that for a year now – because of this difficult moment – I have reconsidered many things.”
