The wife of the 52-year-old man who was murdered in Elos Kissamou, Chania, broke her silence, accusing her fellow villagers of “betraying” her husband. As she stated, the village had turned its back on her family, while her husband had been unjustly stigmatized. Speaking on the “Koinonia Ora MEGA” show, the woman expressed her bitterness and outrage about what is being said after the tragic incident.

“False things are being broadcast about a man we haven’t even had time to bury yet. I wasn’t at the celebration – a week ago I lost my own loved one and was mourning, I couldn’t go,” she declared. She revealed that for more than 15 years, the two families had no contact whatsoever. “There was always an underlying hatred. My husband had been stigmatized. They had stuck him with the nickname ‘Passaris’ because he was hot-tempered. When you bothered him, he wanted to vindicate himself somehow,” she said, adding bitterly: “Here, everyone covers for each other.”
“You will never learn the pure truth here, everyone covers for each other. I will bury my husband in my village – his own village betrayed him. If you ask them, they only have bad things to say about him.”
According to the victim’s wife, two years ago members of the perpetrator’s family attacked and destroyed everything in the 52-year-old’s mother’s house. “My husband was quite angry inside and sometimes, if he saw him somewhere, he might have said something to him.”
Chania: Fear of vendetta looms after celebration murder
After the murder, the 22-year-old fled, with police launching a manhunt to locate him. Hours later he surrendered to police authorities, while during the day the murder weapon was found in a field in Elafonisi.
The village will be like a fortress today, as the 52-year-old’s funeral is scheduled for 3:00 PM, while three hours earlier, the 23-year-old killer will be brought before an investigator and prosecutor to give his testimony. Most likely he will request and receive a 48-hour extension, as one of his lawyers, Apostolos Lytras, has not yet had time to review the case file that has been formed, so that the defendant’s defense strategy can be determined.
It should be noted that both were known to the authorities. The 23-year-old had been charged in the past with random shootings, weapons law violations and dangerous bodily harm, while the 52-year-old had been arrested several times for violations related to agricultural damages, weapon possession and animal abuse.
