Multiple checkpoints for speed violations, helmet use and other traffic offenses have been set up since early evening at various locations across Attica by dozens of police officers in an effort to identify violators who endanger the lives of other drivers.
However, the most significant checkpoint of all appears to have been established in Nea Peramos, where police knew that motorcycle street races were expected. More than 20 high-displacement motorcycles have been immobilized since 9:30 PM near the Nea Peramos ring road as it was determined they were participating in races or watching other drivers race.
The exclusive footage from parapolitika.gr is revealing of the situation that prevailed a little earlier. Dozens of traffic police officers from various units immobilized the motorcycles, issuing violations for dangerous driving, street racing and other traffic code violations. At least two motorcycles were confiscated by police officers who continued their documentation until 10:30 PM. One driver was not carrying a driving license, with the inspection of all violators still ongoing.
Nea Peramos checkpoint: Drivers prepared for street races immobilized
Police officers immobilized the drivers in a safe area where the process of documenting violations began. As shown in the exclusive footage from parapolitika.gr, the majority of motorcycles, besides being high-displacement, have undergone modifications and some of them cost tens of thousands of euros. Police are investigating the possibility that there was also money betting involved, without clarification yet on whether there will be arrests or not.
Traffic police checkpoints to continue
Traffic police checkpoints will continue throughout the night, mainly with breathalyzer tests and legality checks. After all, measures are increased every Friday and Saturday night, not only on the coastal avenue, Syngrou Avenue, Omonia and Kifisias Avenue but also at various points in the basin, including main entrances to the Attiki Odos highway. Among the violations recorded by police officers is the failure to use helmets. The “zero tolerance” policy implemented since August has resulted in thousands of tickets to date, with drivers gradually showing compliance with the measure.
