According to data released by the president of the Eastern Crete Coast Guard Personnel Union, Giorgos Sfakianakis, nearly 14,000 illegal migrants have arrived in Crete since the beginning of the current year. Mr. Sfakianakis emphasizes that from September 2024 until today, instead of decreasing, migration flows to Crete are actually increasing. Indeed, he stressed once again that a redesign based on the new reality must take place and forces must be reinforced.
“Thousands more people are waiting on Libya’s shores to board a boat to come to Greece”
Mr. Sfakianakis warned that thousands more people are waiting on Libya’s shores to board a boat to come to Greece, specifically to Crete as the first point of entry.
As he notes, Greece has extensive experience managing migration in the Eastern Aegean and Evros, and therefore no further delays should be recorded as we will face all of this ahead of us.
