Samothrace is on high alert following the disappearance of a 75-year-old Romanian tourist who was participating in an organized hiking group on the island.

The woman had arrived in Samothrace together with 20 other hikers from Romania, and their route started from the “Keraies” area heading to “Fengari,” one of the most difficult and demanding trails on the island. During the ascent, at approximately 1,200 meters altitude, the 75-year-old felt weak and asked to stop. The group members asked her to remain at that spot until their return, however, when the others came back, she had vanished.
Search operations began immediately and continue without results. The operation involves 7 firefighters from the Fire Service, members of EMAK Thrace, police officers and volunteer rescuers, who are operating in rugged, dangerous areas of the mountain, as the region is characterized by dense vegetation and ravines with difficult access.
