Trains and suburban railway halted – Maritime workers and journalists join mobilizations
No services will operate across the entire rail network, including suburban railway lines, as Hellenic Train announced participation in the 24-hour strike by the Pan-Hellenic Railway Federation.
Maritime unions PEMEN and PENEN have also declared a strike, opposing what they describe as the government bill that “legitimizes 13-hour work days.” The strike is expected to affect departures and arrivals of cruise ships, container vessels and tankers.
Finally, media workers are participating with a four-hour work stoppage from 11:00 to 15:00, following a decision by the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Journalists’ Unions and its member unions (ESIEA, ESIEMTH, ESIEPIN, ESIEThStEE, ESPYT).
Athens city center closes down
EKA and ADEDY have scheduled a protest rally at Syntagma Square at 11 am, while half an hour earlier at 10:30, PAME members will gather at Propylaia.
“We call on all public sector workers to give massive, decisive presence at the strike and rallies across the country aiming for the withdrawal of the bill for 13-hour work days,” ADEDY’s announcement states, emphasizing that “the measures announced by the Prime Minister at the Thessaloniki International Fair constitute provocation and mockery: No real increase is provided for civil servants, beyond a 2% reduction in tax rate – meaning 100 to 200 euros per year, crumbs compared to inflation and relentless taxation.”
GSEE in its announcement calls “every worker to participate in the 24-hour strike mobilization by the Athens Labor Center on Tuesday, 14/10 and the rally it organizes at Syntagma at 11 am. Specifically:
“Against 13-hour work days and further flexibilization of our working conditions
For full restoration of free collective bargaining framework, the only path for radical improvement of workers’ terms and compensation
For reduction of working hours now!”
