Terror erupted on the metro at “Doukissis Plakentias” station when an Iraqi man attacked the driver of the train. The 19-year-old is “well-known” to authorities for previous attacks on metro passengers. Despite his conviction, he was walking free, and only now has the process to revoke his asylum status begun.

Specifically, three months earlier he had attacked metro passengers and was imprisoned. The 19-year-old from Iraq was convicted on December 8, 2024, to a 5-year prison sentence without suspension for dangerous bodily harm, illegal weapon possession, and weapon use. With the same provocative behavior, he attacked both passengers and the train driver on metro line 3 at “Doukissis Plakentias” station, cursing and threatening in perfect Greek “I don’t give a damn, come and f*** you”. It should be noted that during the first metro attack on a German tourist, the victim did not pursue legal action because he wanted to catch his flight. However, the metro company filed a lawsuit against the attacker.
Background of the 19-year-old Iraqi who attacked at Doukissis Plakentias metro station
The 19-year-old claims to be born on January 1, 2006, and entered Greece on September 2, 2019, from Samos as an unaccompanied minor. He had filed an asylum request that was rejected at first instance. The interview conducted on November 4, 2020, in Attica resulted in a first-instance rejection decision on November 19, 2020. He received a residence permit on July 27, 2022, which expires on July 26, 2025. He has not applied for renewal. Belatedly, and after nearly 2 years had passed, he filed an appeal that was accepted and he was granted asylum. During his stay in Greece, the 19-year-old had been hospitalized at a psychiatric hospital for drug and alcohol use, as well as for inability to adapt to unaccompanied minor facilities. As became known, following coordinated actions by Migration & Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris and Deputy Minister of Infrastructure & Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis, the process to revoke his asylum status has begun.
