A two-month extension – until November 5, 2025 – has been granted to citizens, providing them with additional time to obtain their Personal Number, which will serve as the sole means of citizen identification in all transactions with the State. It should be noted that the personal number will gradually replace the multiple numbers currently in use, such as the Social Security Registry Number (AMKA) and the Tax Registry Number (AFM). It’s worth noting that those who do not proceed with activating their Personal Number risk facing problems with basic services such as filing tax returns, paying insurance contributions, and conducting electronic transactions with the State.
Meanwhile, changes are coming for those planning trips abroad, as old police identity cards will no longer allow travel within the European Union from summer 2026, due to the low security of outdated documents. Until then, citizens will only be able to travel with a passport, while early replacement of identity cards with new, digitally secure ones is recommended.
How to obtain your Personal Number step by step
The process is digital and conducted through the myinfo.gov.gr platform using personal Taxisnet codes or alternatively at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and Consular Authorities.
- The citizen enters the myinfo.gov.gr application with Taxisnet codes
- Confirms their personal details
- Selects “Issue P.A.”
- The number is generated automatically
The P.A. consists of 12 alphanumeric characters, of which at least 9 are numbers. It includes 3 alphanumeric elements as a prefix and the 9 digits of the AFM, while the third digit functions as a validity check digit.
