A food safety alert has been issued as the Greek Food Safety Authority (EFET) announced the recall of dried strawberries with natural apple juice concentrate, due to classification as “unsafe.” The sampling inspection was conducted by the Commerce Department of the Development Directorate of the Xanthi Regional Unit in cooperation with EFET for the control of food additives and flavoring substances.

The product is of Serbian origin, packaged in a sealed plastic container of 1Kg, with batch number SJAG0425 and expiration date “best before 23/04/2026.” The product is distributed by the company “AFOI KOUKOUTZELI OE,” based at 1st km Langada – Kolchikou.
EFET: The reason for recall
The product was examined by the Chemical Department of Kavala of the Chemical Service of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace of the General State Laboratory, in cooperation with A.A.D.E. and was classified as irregular and unsafe. It was found to contain sulfur dioxide in concentrations greater than 10 mg/kg, without this substance being listed on the packaging, despite the fact that it is an allergenic ingredient.
The lack of this labeling is considered a serious violation, as individuals with sensitivity to sulfites could be exposed to danger. Sulfur dioxide and sulfite compounds in concentrations above 10 mg/kg are known allergens and their presence must be clearly indicated in the ingredient list.
EFET actions and warnings
The Commerce Department of the Xanthi Development Directorate requested the immediate recall and withdrawal of the entire batch from the market. Related inspections are already underway, aiming to fully protect consumers.
EFET calls on consumers who have already purchased the problematic batch not to consume it, especially if they have allergies to sulfites. The announcement emphasizes the importance of attention to allergenic ingredients and companies’ compliance with labeling obligations, thus protecting public health.
