In Greece, 91 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed from the beginning of the 2025 period until October 1st, while 8 deaths have been recorded, according to data from EODY. Of the 91 cases, 73 presented symptoms from the Central Nervous System (CNS), such as encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis, while the remaining 18 had mild or no CNS symptoms.

During the last week, four new domestic cases were diagnosed/reported along with one death. Two imported cases of the infection have also been recorded, which were exposed in other foreign countries (one in Serbia and one in Italy), which are not included in the further analysis.
West Nile virus infection cases have been recorded in Greece in 40 municipalities of the country, in 22 Regional/Metropolitan Units, specifically in the Regional/Metropolitan Units of: Western Attica, Western Sector of Athens, Piraeus, Islands, Eastern Attica, Central Sector of Athens, Northern Sector of Athens, Elis, Achaia, Aetolia-Acarnania, Evros, Larissa, Karditsa, Trikala, Arta, Pella, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Evia, Corinthia, Messinia and Heraklion.
EODY considers the diagnosis of further cases in the coming period probable and expected. In the European Union and neighboring countries, during the 2025 period, until 24/09/2025, West Nile virus infection cases have been recorded – apart from our country – in: Albania, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Turkey.
