The Attica Region is proceeding with the installation of 388 traffic cameras at 100 strategic locations across the Athens basin, aiming to effectively combat red light violations. This ambitious project targets a dramatic reduction in traffic accidents through continuous monitoring of dangerous intersections and main arteries in Attica.

Traffic cameras: Location selection based on statistical data
According to a report by George Laimos on “Apogeumatini,” the selection of 100 critical locations for traffic camera installation was made following detailed analysis by the Athens Traffic Police. Statistical data revealed areas with the highest frequency of violations and traffic accidents.
The cameras will be installed on major arteries including:
- Syngrou and Amalias avenues
- Kifisias and Poseidonos avenues
- Thivon and NATO avenues
- High-traffic intersections with elevated risk
Technical specifications and data protection
According to Deputy Regional Governor for Road Safety Konstantinos Markouizo, the new traffic cameras feature advanced technology. They capture five photographs and video even in low-light conditions, ensuring reliable 24-hour operation.
For personal data protection, the systems exclusively record the rear section of vehicles. Material is automatically transmitted through secure VPN networks to a central server without human intervention.
Access to camera data remains the exclusive responsibility of the Hellenic Police. The Attica Region does not participate in the fine enforcement process, which is executed according to the Road Traffic Code provisions.
In August 2025, the Athens Traffic Department recorded 21,346 violations, including 224 classified as misdemeanors. Specifically for red light violations, 230 incidents were recorded – a number expected to decrease significantly with the new systems’ operation.
Goal is changing mindset and prevention
Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias emphasizes that traffic cameras do not aim to increase revenue from fines. Instead, the goal is creating a deterrent environment that encourages responsible driving and protects drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The project is part of a broader strategy to create a safer and more civilized road network in Attica. The technological upgrade of monitoring points is expected to contribute decisively to changing driver mentality and reducing dangerous violations.
