We are entering a new era regarding police identity cards, as the process of replacing old cards with new, digitally upgraded versions has already begun. Based on EU Regulation 2019/1157, police identity cards of EU member states that do not have a machine-readable zone (MRZ) will cease to be valid from August 3, 2026. This means that by then, citizens must have proceeded with issuing their new identity card.
Issuing the new identity card is not free. Citizens are required to pay an electronic fee of €10.00, which covers:
- Production of the card body,
- printing and personalization costs,
- and secure transportation expenses.
The fee type is: [4485] – “Issuance of Greek citizen identity card”.
If you are a parent of a large family (a status that must be proven by relevant documentation, e.g., large family booklet), the fee you need to pay is half the amount, €5.00
(Fee Type: [4486] – “Issuance of Greek citizen identity card (large families)”.
Additionally, the required Greek Police stamp of €0.50 is attached to the issuance application (Fee Type: [2043] – “Application (form) for issuing Greek citizen identity card (EL.AS. Stamp)”.
When arriving at the issuing authority for identity card issuance, you must have already issued the required fees. For an e-fee to be used/submitted to the agency, its payment must be completed.
New appointment and service system for new identity cards
Due to the increased activity expected with the introduction of the Personal Number, the Ministry of Digital Governance has provided for a new appointment system. The Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, stated that the implementation of the Personal Number will be accompanied by the operation of this new platform, which aims to facilitate citizens and decongest police stations.
