Compensation totaling 2.9 million euros has already been paid to beneficiaries of the two national tragedies in Mati and Mandra. Specifically, to date, the Greek State has accepted 31 decisions from Administrative Courts and has withdrawn from 6 appeals that had been filed, fully implementing the legislative regulation established in April 2025. The State’s main objective is the rapid completion of the payment process, without bureaucratic obstacles and with simplified procedures. Today, the average payment time for compensation does not exceed one month, provided that all necessary documents have been submitted timely and correctly.
The regulation voted in parliament following a proposal by the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, provides for the State not to exercise legal remedies against issued decisions, as well as for the State to withdraw from exercised legal remedies against decisions that award monetary satisfaction due to mental anguish or moral damage for deaths and injuries caused by the deadly fire in Mati and the floods in Mandra, as well as compensation for hospitalization and funeral expenses.
From the passing of the regulation until today, in a period of just six months, the State has withdrawn from:
* 32 legal remedies concerning Mati,
* 5 legal remedies concerning Mandra,
The exact amount paid to beneficiaries amounts to 2,863,914.30 euros.
As noted, it is self-evident that no financial compensation can cover the unspeakable void of the loss of human lives. However, the State’s withdrawal constitutes a minimal act of respect towards the victims and their families. At the same time, it represents a clear commitment that the State will continue to stand by them.
