The 62-year-old secretly buried her mother because, as she confessed, she wanted to continue collecting her pension and benefits due to the financial problems she was facing.
Boeotia: How the pension fraud was exposed
The fraud was exposed when, following complaints from villagers and relatives, an investigation was conducted by the relevant authorities to check on the condition of the elderly woman who had been missing for years, as the 62-year-old claimed she was alive, but no one had seen her. As MEGA revealed, the 62-year-old, in order to continue her fraud, presented another elderly woman as her mother. Police officers realized that some details and characteristics of the elderly woman did not match those of the 91-year-old mother. So, with a photograph of her, they searched the small village where the 62-year-old lives and discovered that it was actually the mother of another resident.
It should be noted that there had been previous pressure from relatives and residents who were looking for the elderly woman and had lost track of her. Despite persistent questioning, the 62-year-old, who was director of the Oinofyta Citizens Service Center, constantly assured everyone that her mother was at home. As pressure mounted, she claimed that her mother wasn’t receiving visitors due to health problems she was facing. Later, when she could no longer justify this situation, she stated that her mother was in an elderly care facility. However, she failed to convince villagers and relatives, and so a formal complaint was made regarding the elderly woman’s disappearance.

According to testimonies from relatives, the 62-year-old fabricated a story about her mother’s fate, falling into contradictions. At times she claimed that her mother had disappeared, while other times she would speak loudly to her, trying to convince neighbors that she was alive. The community president, Takis Aikaterinis, revealed that there had been suspicions for some time and he had intervened repeatedly to learn the truth.
The 62-year-old admitted to police that she buried her mother in a barn next to the house, without animals and used only as storage, in order to continue receiving benefits and pension, as she was facing serious financial problems.

The 62-year-old was arrested and will be brought before the Thebes prosecutor. A case file is being compiled against her for “failure to report discovery of a dead body,” “false testimony,” “manslaughter by negligence,” and “fraud.”
